What is Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central?

Dynamics 365 is Microsoft’s range of Business Applications. Microsoft Business Central is one of these apps with ERP capabilities. It is an accounting management software that helps with sales, inventory management, project management and more.

What’s the difference between Business Central and NAV?

Dynamics NAV, or Navision, was the on-premise platform before Business Central. Microsoft acquired NAV in 2002 and it was later transformed into the accounting management solution software integrated into Dynamics 365 in 2016.

They are both similar in that there are yearly updates and improvements. However, as Business Central works within the cloud, there is better integration with 3rd party apps, Microsoft packages, and increased license flexibility.

What’s the difference between Business Central on-premise and online?

Business Central on-premise has frequent licensing and there are no automatic updates, meaning users should have a disaster recovery plan prepared. Investment in hardware is needed as well as maintenance on this hardware. When linking to other products, it is not as seamless and linking to Teams and 3rd party apps is not an option.

Alternatively, Business Central cloud online accounting management software is subscription-based and is securely hosted by Azure. Updates are automatic and seamless and there is no hardware needed, and no IT maintenance required. Business Central is accessible from anywhere with an internet connection. Business Central does not have a payroll system included, however, there is the option to connect to 3rd party payroll systems within Business Central. For employee records, you can keep track of employee details, contracts, qualifications, contracts, and more within Business Central. Microsoft does provide a more streamlined HR system using Dynamics 365 Human Resources for those needing this with their accounting management software.

How does the licensing work with Business Central?

You can choose from three different licensing packages. Premium gives you complete access to all modules. Essential gives complete full access to the modules apart from manufacturing and service management. The Team Member licence allows you to read the modules only and with reduced access to certain capabilities.
